a closer look at my week: Mondays

Monday 3: open mic, The Box Office (St 244), 7.30 pm.

[My weekly performance schedule goes out with very little detail – this week I am filling in some of the gaps]

This open mic used to be held at Good Times Bar, and now continues at The Box Office. A smaller room, and a more intimate performance space. Once in a while we do a themed night where we limit ourselves to songs we can justify within a particular topic – for instance, Midnight Train to Georgia was performed for Transport, Time, What State Are You In, and What’s Her Name – also Occupations and Fruit for Gladys Knight and the Pips. Then we all head to Oscar’s to see the Cambodia Country Band.

Sunday 9: the Sunday Sundowner Sessions at Tacos Kokopelli, 5 pm

[My weekly performance schedule goes out with very little detail – this week I am filling in some of the gaps]

The longest running open mic in Phnom Penh started up at the now long-gone Rubies and moved to what was then the Alley Cat (now Tacos Kokopelli) around five years ago. There have been some lean times, but this event continues to be a high point of my week. I started it up because this is what I wanted to do on a late Sunday afternoon – play music with people who love to play music. My focus in open mics is to reduce the MAWGG factor (middle aged white guys playing guitar) by encouraging as many as possible to take part – fostering a wider community of performers and making the experience more enjoyable for the audience. Bands form, try themselves out, and come back to practice.  People get behind the microphone for the first time.  Folk sing along.  It’s a blast.

a closer look at my week: Friday & Saturday

Friday 7: solo at Bona’s Pub (Sts 15 & 130), 9 pm
Saturday 8: night off, probably sing a few with K’n’E, the weekend house band at Oscar’s

[My weekly performance schedule goes out with very little detail – this week I am filling in some of the gaps]

The weekend is the main variability in my schedule – both who I play with and where depend upon bookings and availabilities. My favourite venues for Friday and Saturday are Tacos Kokopelli, Garage, Botanico, Farm to Table for the acoustics, Oscar’s for the electrics. Hoping there will be a new fitting electric venue or two coming along during the high season but that may be overly optimistic.

a closer look at my week: Thursdays

Thursday 6: with The Extraordinary Chambers at Oscar’s on the Corner, 10 pm

[My weekly performance schedule goes out with very little detail – this week I am filling in some of the gaps]

I’m known to spend a lot of time at Oscar’s, and I particularly enjoy my Thursday nights there with The Extraordinary Chambers, named after my former place of work. Dave and I have been playing together once a week for nearly two and a half years now, recently joined by drummer Tip and lead guitarist Greg – the band is tight and fun and gritty.  A mixture of my own tunes done in that particular TEC way and a bunch of crunchy bar band songs that no one else does (mostly).
